During my Authenticum lecture on The Intellectual Foundations of the New Evangelization I remarked that the end or goal of politics is justice and peace. During the discussion a gentleman asked whether this might be too limited, and suggested that the goal of politics should be maximization of human potential.
Here is my off the cuff answer
The issue of human flourishing is important, and while politics plays an important role essential role in helping to create the conditions for flourishing, the end of politics is not human flourishing but justice. We perfect ourselves in a plurality of spheres including the family, church, and civil society and need to be careful not to conflate politics and society.
